What is cirrhosis of the liver?
Cirrhosis is an often irreversible scarring of the liver. This is usually the result of various problems that damage liver cells over time.
Eventually, damage from cirrhosis becomes so severe that the normal structure of the liver is changed and it stops functioning correctly.
Cirrhosis treatment
While damage to your liver can't be reversed, the goal of treatment is to slow down the buildup of scar tissue and prevent or treat other health problems. In many cases you may be able to delay or stop any more liver damage.
Treatment plans for patients will be determined by their care team based on age, medical history, type and stage of liver disease (cirrhosis) and personal preferences.
Cirrhosis treatment options may include:
- Changes in diet
- Decreasing alcohol consumption
- Medication
- Surgery
- Clinical trials (when appropriate)
