Breast reconstruction
Breast reconstruction
Breast reconstruction is a type of plastic surgery that can be performed either immediately following a mastectomy—or even years later—to create a breast similar in appearance to the breast that was removed. Reconstruction can improve the significant differences in the size and shape of many women’s breasts.
There are multiple forms of breast reconstruction. Some use implants, some use tissue and some involve a combination of both. Regardless of the type, the goal is always to help restore breast shape after a mastectomy.
Implant reconstruction involves inserting an implant that is filled with saline or silicone gel under or above the chest muscle and skin to create a breast mound. Recovery for this type of reconstruction is typically easier, but may require multiple procedures. Patients also need to consider treatments like radiation before or after a mastectomy, which may eliminate implant reconstruction as an option.
Tissue-based reconstruction, also referred to as a tissue flap, uses tissue harvested from another part of the body—typically the belly, thigh or back—to fill in the area of the missing breast tissue. One benefit to a tissue flap is that it may provide a more natural look than an implant. Tissue-based reconstruction typically lasts longer and does not require maintenance.
Current federal legislation requires health insurers to cover the cost of reconstructive plastic surgery procedures.
