Dementia causes and symptoms

Dementia is a general term for a number of related brain issues that impact patients by causing confusion and making it hard to remember, communicate, form complete thoughts or otherwise reason.

Although dementia can be caused by many different conditions, Alzheimer's disease is the most common.

Dementia often starts with mild impacts on memory, reasoning, language skills and personality that get worse as nerve cells in the brain are damaged and parts of the brain begin to shrink.

It is most common in the elderly.

Dementia treatment options

Although there is no cure for dementia, receiving ongoing, skilled care is essential to helping patients function at as high a level as they are able for as long as they are able.

Dementia treatment can slow the progression of symptoms like memory loss and help ease communication, behavioral and sleep problems.
