Concussions and brain injuries
Concussions can be a serious injury that affects certain brain functions if not cared for quickly and monitored correctly.
Sudden impacts to the head during sports events, accidents or intense shaking cause the brain to hit the inside of the skull, leading to a concussion.
While some concussions are more serious than others, they all can lead to brain injury, especially for people experiencing repeat concussions of any kind.
Concussion symptoms and treatments
It's important to have a concussion diagnosed and monitored soon after it happens.
While there is no quick fix, treating concussion symptoms such as headache, confusion or memory loss, blurred vision and nausea-and giving the brain time to heal-are important to limiting lasting damage and symptoms.
Concussion treatments
While the treatment for concussion may vary based on the severity and the individual’s needs, rest is often a big part of addressing any concussion. Other treatments may include:
- Physical and/or occupational therapy
- Medications, such as pain relievers, antidepressants, antianxiety drugs, sleep aids and muscle relaxants
- Clinical trials (when appropriate)
